Deaton and Dreze ( 2009) showed that despite no major increase in the ratio of food prices in relation to non-food items after 1990–2000 and despite the overall growth in per capita income, household per capita calorie consumption has actually gone down by 10 per cent between 19–2005 in rural India, whereas in urban India, it has been constant.
